It is here that the key production facilities of ZVS holding and VOP Nováky are located, focused on the development, production, and assembly of large-caliber ammunition. We consider participation in one of the most significant defence and security events in the region both an honor and a duty.

IDEB is a platform showcasing Slovakia’s technological capabilities in the defence sector. From May 12 to 14 in Bratislava, we will present our products in a way never seen here before. Visitors will see not only finished products but also their individual parts and components – that is, the very “insides” of the ammunition, individual ingredients, propellants, gunpowder, TNT, and nitrocellulose. This is a unique opportunity to understand the complexity of the development and production behind every single piece. 

Under the banner of the CSG Group, which offers a broad portfolio of solutions for armed forces – from ammunition to heavy equipment and armored vehicles – we will be part of an exhibition showcasing the breadth and depth of our capabilities. The two-story booth, spanning 431 m², will once again be among the largest in the entire exhibition.

The MSM GROUP exhibition will feature 105 and 155 mm artillery ammunition, 105, 120, and 125 mm tank ammunition, medium-caliber 30×173, 30×165, and 20×102 mm ammunition, 30×113, training ammunition, 122 mm Grad, and the aforementioned pyrotechnic components. Health Day offered a broad range of practical screenings and expert consultations aimed at raising awareness of prevention and promoting a healthy lifestyle. Employees had the opportunity to undergo body composition analysis using the InBody device, providing insights into muscle mass, body fat, and basal metabolic rate. Nutritional counselling was also available, along with measurements of key health indicators such as cholesterol, blood glucose, uric acid, and blood pressure.

Considerable interest was drawn by specialist activities focused on the prevention of breast and colorectal cancer, as well as heart diagnostics using the WIWE device, capable of identifying potential risks associated with heart rhythm irregularities. Employees could also assess the condition of their vascular system through vascular patency testing.

Blood Donation as a Key Highlight

Blood donation formed an integral part of the event and remains one of its most meaningful highlights. A total of 29 colleagues, including 10 first-time donors, contributed to helping save lives. Among the donors were ZVS CEO Jakub Krchňavý and HR Director Alica Egylová. The welcoming atmosphere was complemented by coffee prepared by professional baristas, as well as complimentary fresh fruit, symbolically supporting the message of a healthier lifestyle.

Health Day Beyond Slovakia

A similarly themed Health Day was also held at our 14. Oktobar plant in Serbia, where employees could take advantage of preventive eye examinations and blood glucose testing. The focus was on prevention and the early detection of potential health risks.

The events in both countries demonstrated that employee care extends beyond the workplace to include active support for health and overall well-being. Initiatives like these not only contribute to prevention but also send a clear message that people truly matter.

The transaction represents another step in CSG’s long-term strategy focused on strengthening production capacities, technological know-how and vertical integration in the field of ammunition and land systems manufacturing. The transaction also includes the Hirtenberger Defence Systems production facility in Austria, which will significantly reinforce CSG’s manufacturing base in Europe.

At the same time, we are gaining cutting-edge technological know-how and new production capacities. This will enable us to increase ammunition output for both European and global customers. The partnership aims not only to implement individual projects but also to establish a Central European industrial cooperation framework capable of serving growing international demand, thereby strengthening the long-term market position of both companies. As part of the cooperation, the parties are therefore examining the possibility of establishing a joint venture in Slovakia, which could support joint industrial programs and strengthen international sales capabilities, as well as participate in the assembly of certain products.

Hirtenberger Defence Systems also brings long-standing technological know-how in the development of mortar systems and ammunition to the CSG Group, enabling CSG to expand its existing mortar ammunition portfolio with new types. The company’s history dates back to 1860, and for more than five decades it has focused on the development of mortar rounds and mortar systems. In addition to ammunition, it develops complete mortar systems, sighting and optical technologies, support equipment for mortar units, as well as digital fire control systems.

Thanks to this combination of capabilities, CSG will be able to offer customers comprehensive mortar solutions encompassing complete systems, a broad portfolio of ammunition, sighting technologies and supporting logistical equipment. This integrated approach, where individual components are developed as a unified whole, delivers higher accuracy, reliability and ease of operation in the field. A key technological value of HDS also lies in its advanced digital fire control systems (FCS). These enable precise targeting and fire control, integration into modern Battle Management Systems, and faster deployment of mortar units in the field. The digital fire control system also allows targeting without direct line of sight and without reliance on external navigation systems. This capability represents a significant technological enhancement for CSG’s overall portfolio.

The acquisition is also aligned with CSG’s long-term strategy focused on vertical integration of ammunition and weapon systems production. The integration of HDS will enable better control over the supply chain, optimization of production across the group, and more efficient utilization of capacities in both component and final product manufacturing. The memorandum establishes a framework for cooperation in areas such as infrastructure modernization, cultural support, and sports development. The intention is to systematically invest in the environment in which the company operates and contribute to its sustainable growth. “We see Strážske and the entire region as an important location for our activities. Our goal is not only industrial development, but also improving living conditions for local residents, from infrastructure to supporting cultural and sporting events,” said Jakub Krchňavý, CEO of ZVS holding.

As part of the cooperation, support is planned for the reconstruction of local roads, public lighting, and other infrastructure projects that will contribute to the modernization of the town. At the same time, the company aims to actively participate in community life by supporting cultural events, municipal activities, and sports organizations.

CSG activities in the region

The partnership builds on the broader investment activities of the CSG group in the region. These also include a planned joint venture with Eurenco focused on the construction of a new factory. The production plant of EURENCO and ZVS holding in Strážske will focus on the production of Modular Artillery Charge Systems (MACS), which are a key component of modern artillery ammunition used by the armed forces of NATO member states. The availability of these charges is currently one of the main limiting factors in increasing production capacity for artillery ammunition in Europe.

The memorandum represents another step within the ongoing strategic and long-term cooperation between MSM GROUP and EURENCO in the field of production and supply of energetic materials. It is also a significant step toward strengthening the European defence industrial base and the security of supply chains. It has the potential to bring new jobs to the region, strengthen its industrial base, and increase its economic attractiveness. “Industrial development must go hand in hand with regional development. Investments in production are naturally complemented by investments in infrastructure and community support, so that local residents also benefit from our presence,” added Jakub Krchňavý.

The town of Strážske views the memorandum as an opportunity for systematic development and strengthening cooperation with a strategic partner. “As early as 2024, together with MSM GROUP, we began with the revitalisation of the former Chemko Strážske facility with the aim of establishing production capacity for modular propellant charge systems for large-calibre ammunition. The signing of the memorandum on the establishment of this new plant in eastern Slovakia represents an important step towards strengthening the domestic defence industry and strategic self-sufficiency. An investment amounting to hundreds of millions of euros and the creation of hundreds of qualified jobs constitute a significant contribution not only to the region but also to the security of the Slovak Republic as a whole. It is also another step towards achieving annual production volumes exceeding one million rounds of large-calibre ammunition,” said Robert Kaliňák, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of the Slovak Republic.

Since 2015, ZVS holding has been owned 50% by the state-owned enterprise DMD Group, with the remaining 50% held by MSM GROUP, a member of the industrial and technology group CSG, specifically its CSG Defence Systems division. The new EURENCO and ZVS holding joint production plant in Strážske will focus on the manufacture of Modular Artillery Charge Systems (MACS), which constitute a key component of modern artillery ammunition used by the armed forces of NATO member states. The availability of such propellant charge systems is currently one of the main limiting factors in increasing artillery ammunition production capacity in Europe. The project builds on the ongoing long-term strategic cooperation between MSM GROUP and EURENCO in the field of energetic materials production and supply and represents a significant step towards strengthening the European defence industrial base and securing supply chains. 

At the same time, the project forms part of CSG’s long-term strategy to ensure control over the production of key components. By establishing this new production capacity, CSG further strengthens its position as one of Europe’s leading ammunition manufacturers and confirms its ability to develop comprehensive and technologically advanced production chains within the defence industry. The project also reinforces EURENCO’s position as the European champion in the field of energetic materials and a key strategic player in support of European Union sovereignty.

Construction of the new plant in the cadastral area of the town of Strážske in eastern Slovakia is scheduled to commence in the near term, with production capacity expected to become operational in 2028. The planned annual output will reach several hundred thousand modular propellant charge systems. The total investment in the project amounts to approximately EUR 300 million.

“This project represents a major milestone in the development of European production capacities for key components of artillery ammunition. The combination of EURENCO’s technological expertise and the industrial strength of CSG will enable us to build a modern production facility that will contribute to supply chain stability and strengthen Europe’s ability to respond to growing security needs,” said Jan Marinov, Director of CSG Defence Systems.

The newly established joint venture will combine EURENCO’s technological expertise in energetic materials with the industrial infrastructure and manufacturing experience of CSG Group and the state-owned company ZVS holding, a.s. The new capacity will play an important role in expanding Europe’s capabilities in the production of modular propellant charges and will contribute to enhancing the resilience and self-sufficiency of the European defence industry.

The story of Slovak biathlon shows that when talent is combined with determination and strong partnerships, the result is success the entire country can be proud of. Biathlon has brought Slovakia the highest number of Olympic medals among all winter sports. To date, the sport has earned seven medals – three gold and four silver. The documents were signed today in Athens by Jiří Schönweitz, Managing Director of MSM Greece, and Christoforos Boutsikakis, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Hellenic Defence Systems. The signed agreements include in particular the Articles of Association and a concession agreement, enabling the formal establishment of Hellenic Ammunition S.A.

“Today’s signing marks a key milestone not only for our joint project with HDS, but also for strengthening Europe’s defence industrial base. Lavrio is becoming an important pillar of ammunition production for Greece, Europe and its allies,” said Jiří Schönweitz, Managing Director of MSM Greece. “We would like to thank everyone involved in making this venture possible, with special thanks to Hellenic Defence Systems for their trust, as well as to the Greek government and the relevant ministries for their forward-looking approach and recognition of the project’s potential. We are confident that, in the future, all those involved will look back with pride on this important step, which will help place the Greek defence manufacturing industry back on the world map where it belongs,” Mr. Schönweitz added.

“The restoration of large-calibre ammunition production in Lavrio is a strategic step for the Greek defence industry and for Europe’s security. The joint venture with CSG brings investment, modern technologies and know-how that will enable sustainable long-term development of capacities and the creation of hundreds of jobs,” added Christoforos Boutsikakis, CEO of Hellenic Defence Systems.

Under the signed agreements, MSM will obtain managerial control over the Lavrio production site for a period of 25 years, allowing for the implementation of an extensive investment and modernisation programme. Approximately 120 employees currently work at the Lavrio facility. The company plans to recruit an additional 180 employees this year, with total employment expected to reach around 300 by the end of the year.

Large-calibre ammunition production will operate in a multi-shift regime in 2026. The plant is already producing 155 mm ammunition, with further calibres planned to be introduced over the course of the year. A significant technological milestone will be the launch of production of so-called base bleed grain (composite propellant), scheduled for the second half of this year.

The project also includes the restoration of TNT production in Lavrio. Explosives production in Europe has long been constrained due to historical outsourcing of energy-intensive processes outside the region. The TNT project in Lavrio is technologically complex and has been expanded in scope: beyond nitration itself, it now also includes the production of key intermediate products. Production is scheduled to begin at the turn of 2026 and 2027. Overall investments in Lavrio amount to several tens of millions of euros, with CSG having committed to investing up to €50 million into the joint venture over the long term.
